| The prolific and unquestionable talent of marine artist, author, and historian Jim Clary is traced to his early days as a schoolboy. He remembers vividly having his ears boxed while drawing in arithmetic. Yet his love for the sea and ships no doubt began during those early years when he lived near the Detroit River, fishing and playing amid the sea gulls and the beckoning whistles of passing vessels. This environment, he believes, established his strong desire to paint ships. So when the family moved to the rural town of Richmond, Michigan, he spent much of his time in nearby St. Clair, a small town along the St. Clair River, deepening his interest in ship's lore and led him to devote his full talents to painting ships and collecting bits and pieces of maritime history. Like most of the famous marine artists of the past, Clary is self-taught. Hungry for and fascinated by maritime lore, his natural talent evolved through the combined effort of drawing and the love
and knowledge of ships. Thus having relied on extensive study and experience, his
works are profound statements of historical accuracy and articulate detail - a trademark that made him famous. |

My love of the water
began as a child when my family would spend all summer in a cottage on a lake in
Michigan. I began sailing as a windsurfer then progressed to sailboats. I now
sail all summer on Lake Michigan and race with The Little Traverse Yacht Club.
I own a WindRider tri-marman.
In the winter I sail
on the Gulf of Mexico. In between I race with The University of Michigan Sailing
Club where I also enjoy being a sailing instructor. We sail J15s and Lasers.
I began drawing and
painting as a child as well. I graduated from college with an degree in fine art
and spent many years as a commercial illustrator.

The Endurance |
I primarily work in graphite, but I also enjoy exploring other mediums such as oil pastels and watercolours. I find that the graphite allows me to obtain the high level of detail seen in my work, while pastels allow a more impressionistic side to develop in the nature landscapes.
My quest for detail is never ending and comes somewhat from my scientific and chemistry education as well as my love of nature in its true form.
Having no formal art training, the 1000 Islands and growing up in a home where arts and crafts were common place were extremely influential. |

Henk's paintings are examples of "Fine Art". They are realistic and painted in oils and pastel.
He is associated with Rosenstiel's, Nature in Art, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum America, Society of Animal Artists in America. He can also be found on the Dutch Wildlife Art Web Site and he exhibits his coastal art in the "Gallery Montpellier" Cheltenham.
Henk was born in the Netherlands in 1940 and spent the first part of his life there. In 1952 he emigrated with his family to South Africa. After 27 years he returned to the Netherlands and in 1984 he moved to England. He is primarily a self taught artist, although he studied for one year at both the Bill Ainsley School of Art and the Johannesburg Art College. The paintings below give examples of how his career as an artist developed. |
